SteamWorld Quest Coming to Switch; Change of Direction for Steampunk Robot Series

SteamWorld Dig is a procedurally generated Metroidvania, while its sequel has carefully handcrafted levels. SteamWorld Heist, on the other hand, manages to be a turn-based strategy game that requires careful aim and calls for plenty of improvisation. Today, SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech was unveiled- coming to the Nintendo Switch this year, it’s a turn-based RPG in which you lead a party of Steambots through a world that seems much lusher and more natural than any SteamWorld game before it- check out the trailer below!

In addition to the fantasy setting of knights and dragons, the game also features deckbuilding mechanics with over 100 cards- apparently, there’s been a lot of demand for this sort of game. “For years,” says the official press release, “the SteamWorld community has asked us to create an RPG. In fact, on multiple occasions we’ve asked our followers what they’d like us to make next, and so far an RPG has been the number one request. So we took it upon ourselves to create a new kind of game, to surprise and delight both fans of the genre as well as existing SteamWorld fans.”

As a big fan of the series, I’m excited to how Hand of Gilgamech turns out; there’s not much information about the story and characters at the moment, but the game’s title makes me suspect that it draws some inspiration from Sumerian legends. What do you think- is this a good direction for the SteamWorld games? Let us know in the comments below, or hit us up and follow on Twitter @1RuleBeCool.
